Applications are broken down by the USCG by category.
- Original applications. These are new applications from
first time mariners. What kind of Merchant Mariner
Credential you obtain is dependant on your sea time.
- Renewal applications. This is for established mariners
who already have their credential. Transportation
Workers Identification Cards(TWIC) are required for all
renewals even if you had not previously had one.
- Duplicates. Are issued if you've misplaced your
credential. Again, TWICs are required for all issues of
duplicates.
- Upgrades. Or Raise of Grade Endorsement. These are
similar to original applications in that you will be required
to pass a physical exam, drug test, and demonstrate
proficiencies in maritime knowledge and pass an exam.
- Continuity. Put simply, it means that you have a license
that is or will soon expire but you wish to keep it. It is a
way of retaining your credential with the understanding
that you can no longer use it.
